My eyes slowly open against the sunlight coming through the window. As I wake up, I realize I have a smile on my face. God, when is the last time I woke up with a smile?

I roll over and look at my phone, the smile on my face growing even wider. It’s ridiculous how happy I am from just a text.

Dom: Hey, angel, haven’t heard from you in a while. Everything ok?

Me: Hey :) I’m ok. Wishing you were here though

Dom: Well, look who figured out how to use emojis!

Me: Yeah, yeah, I’m sure it took you a while too, old man ;)

Dom: Low blow, little bird, haha

Me: I know you can’t tell me what you’re doing, but are you staying safe?

Dom: Always, Beth. Can’t wait to see you tonight

Me: Same here :) :) :) :) :) :)

Dom: Slow down there, champ!

I giggle at his response and decide to get up and hop in the shower.

Once the warm water washes over my skin, I feel my muscles relax as I melt into the stream. My every thought is consumed by Dom. It’s a heady feeling, but one I’m thoroughly enjoying. Even in the few short days that we’ve taken our relationship to the next level, he’s made me feel so much confidence in who I am and what I want. He makes me feel important and heard, like I matter. Every day I feel like I’m getting back a little piece of my power.

I stay in the shower until I’m all pruney. By the time I dry off, I’m determined to keep living my life. I’ve been in purgatory for far too long, and I’m ready to reclaim more of my freedom. My power.

I decide to expand my world, just a little bit. Baby steps. I don’t want to have to depend on Dom for everything, so I want to surprise him by showing up at the club and getting out of my comfort zone.

Once I’m dressed and have had some food, I call Mia, knowing she’ll be on board to help me get ready.

“Beth? Is everything ok?” She sounds panicked. I guess I deserve that. I never call her, she’s always the one to initiate anything with me.

“Yeah, yeah, sorry to worry you.”

“Oh, good,” she sounds relieved. “What’s up?”

“So… I was thinking maybe I’d take you up on the offer to get drinks at the clubhouse?”

“Eeeeeeeeek! OMG, girl, are you for real? Please don’t be messing with me!”

I laugh at her delighted response. Yeah, I think I could live my life with friends like her and a man like Dom. No, not like them. Just… them.

“I’m for real.” Mia shrieks again.

“Sorry, sorry, I’m under control now. Why the change of heart?”

“I just figured it was time to start taking some of my power back, you know? And…”

“Aaaaaannnnndddd?” She draws out the word, coaxing me to go on like she already knows what I’m going to say.

“And, I guess I want to surprise Dom. He’s done so much to help me and encourage me, and I want to show him that I really am getting better.
